Larry joined the Air Force in March 1966 and attended basic training at Lackland AFB, TX. His first assignment was to technical school at Sheppard AFB, TX to learn the ins and outs of Aircraft Maintenance (APG) and become a Crew Chief.
From there, assignments carried him across the country and the world –
July 1966 – July 1967 – Kelly AFB, TX – Aircraft Maintenance C-124’s – 19th MASSq.
July 1967 – October 1967 – Otis AFB, MA – Aircraft Maintenance EC-121R’s (Bat Cats) 553rd OMS.
November 1967 – October 1968 – Korat RTAFB, Thailand – Aircraft Maintenance EC-121R (Bat Cats) 553rd OMS.
November 1968 – April 1969 – Chanute AFB, IL – Aircraft Maintenance T-29’s and C-131’s 4432nd ATS (TAC).
April 1969 – June 1969 – Recalled to Korat RTAFB, Thailand - Aircraft Maintenance EC-121R’s (Bat Cats) 553rd OMS.
June 1969 – January 1970 - Chanute AFB, IL – Aircraft Maintenance T-29’s and C-131’s 4432nd ATS (TAC).
January 1970 – December 1970 – Break in USAF.
December 1970 – February 1971 – Sheppard AFB, TX – Basic Loadmaster School
February 1971 – April 1987 – Charleston AFB, SC – 41st MAS Loadmaster (LM, ILM & FELM)
In April 1987, Larry retired from the Air Force and took over full time duties as Fire Chief of Ashley River Fire Department in Dorchester County, South Carolina.
In October 1991, Larry accepted a position with Laurens County, SC as their first Fire & Rescue Coordinator. In December 1999 he had the duties of County Emergency Management added to his job description.
Larry retired from the Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management in 2002.
He and his wife Jan enjoy traveling around the country in their camper.
Retirement is a full time job with little or no time off and it is a rough life, but someone has to do it!!!
